The Peso Crisis and the Emergence of the Barzon
Alejandro Serrano
Abstract
The mobilization of Mexico’s society has gone in tandem with the financial crises that the country has suffered.
This paper studies the emergence of a group of debtors called Barzon at the time of the 1994 financial crisis. This
movement differs from previous revolts due to the inclusion of several socioeconomic classes. Furthermore, the
appearance of the movement coincided with a democratization and transparency of Mexico during the late 1990s.
Therefore, the government had to negotiate with the Barzon rather than violently placate as it had done with
other movements in the past.
